One of London’s most famous theatres is The Globe, the recreation of the original Globe Theatre where, just over 500 years ago, many of Shakespeare’s plays were originally performed. The original theatre burned down in 1513, only 14 years after it was built, but became of such cultural significance that at the end of the 20th century, actor Sam Wannamaker was inspired to rebuild it as close as possible to the original site.
The modern Globe Theatre was officially opened in 1997 and fast became a popular stop on the tourist trail. There are daily guided tours of the theatre throughout the year, although in the summer months they may be restricted due to performances and rehearsals.
Until the end of October, you can see productions of Shakespeare’s plays as they would originally have been staged. One of the joys of going to The Globe is that, for just £5, you can stand in the yard and get the best views of the action. However, there are downsides to this: apart from having to stand for the entire performance (sitting on the floor is not permitted), you are also open to the elements, so if it rains, you’ll get wet!
If you don’t think you can stand for that length of time, or don’t want to risk the vagaries of the British weather, you can book one of the seats in the gallery under the famous thatched roof. Cushions are available to hire and you can reserve them when you book your tickets.
There are matinee and evening performances on most days, and the theatre has a café as well as a restaurant where you can get something to eat before the performance (or a Midsummer Night’s Dream-themed afternoon tea if you’re really pushing the boat out).
Talking of pushing the boat out, wouldn’t it be lovely to make your outing more special and arrive by boat! The Globe is situated by Bankside Pier, so you could come aboard at Westminster Pier, spend the morning on a Circular Cruise hop-on/hop-off journey which will allow you to explore the South Bank, then hop back on at Festival Pier and we’ll deliver you right to the door of the theatre.
There’s no time like the present. Book your tickets for The Globe, then book your Circular Cruise tickets.
